Tara River Canyon
Craggy mountains and crystal-clear turquoise-colored rivers form fantastic landscapes in the north of Montenegro. The Tara River Canyon is the deepest in Europe and it’s the world’s second in depth after the American Grand Canyon. This natural wonder is about 80 km long and up to 1,300 meters deep. It’s a part of Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A trip to the canyon from the coast takes about 4 hours, but on the way there will be so many amazing places to see – observation decks, gorges, old fortresses, and temples — that the trip is likely to take longer.
If you don’t want to miss anything interesting in your trip, you can plan an overnight. You can stay in Žabljak, one of the centers of Montenegro’s mountain tourism. There are plenty of hotels and apartments and sightseeing tour agencies in the town. To feel the grandeur of the Tara River Canyon, tourists first visit Đurđevića Tara Bridge. It rises 172 meters above the river and has a magnificient view of the canyon. The bridge itself bedazzles with the great span of its arches and fine design. These arches span 365 meters over the river.
A few ziplines between the canyon hills operate in summer. If you’re a thrill-seeker, these are a great way to tickle your nerves and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of marvelous landscapes. A different view of the green banks of Tara opens from the bottom of the canyon. In summer you can enjoy rafting and canoe paddling there. The sail-down distance is more than 20 km and it has rapids of different complexity levels. There are both easy hiking tours and trekking tours for climbers. In the winter days, you can enjoy alpine skiing and snowboarding.
Tara flows between the highest ridges in Montenegro. The highest altitude here is 2552 meters — it’s a peak called Bobotov Kuk. The banks of the river are covered with woodlands of deciduous and coniferous forests. On the slopes of the canyon, you can see black pines — a Mediterranean tree with the dark-brown bark and broad crown. The trees are 40 meters tall. Tara is a great place for everyone fond of highlands, nature, and activity holidays. Such a journey across the country allows you to feel the spirit of Montenegro.
